Christchurch was struck by an earthquake on February 22, 2011. 185 people were killed, and significant damage was done to the city and surroundings.
This was also right around the changeover from Summer to Winter on the Ice, so there are returners to the Ice that remember when this happened – being displaced due to building damage, pitching in and helping after the earthquake.
There is still a lot of damage to the city. New Zealand is a country that values its history, its culture, and its people in an almost palpable way.
The ducks floating here are not real ducks. It took me a while to realize this, and after that I stood for a little while to watch them float.
